About the event
Explore paradise with Stile Antico’s delicious programme of earthly and heavenly delights, combining sacred and secular music of the Renaissance and Early Baroque. Shepherds, nymphs and birds abound in the Arcadian gardens, brought to life by madrigalists Byrd, Josquin and Monteverdi. Love, both human and divine, is explored in settings of the biblical Song of Songs. Filled with imagery of the natural world, this enigmatic text inspired composers known for their sacred music, such as Palestrina, Guerrero and Praetorius. At the climax of the programme is Huw Watkins' dazzling setting of Shakespeare, The Phoenix and the Turtle, composed for the twelve voices of Stile Antico. ‘It’s never a good idea to miss a concert from this British vocal ensemble: There are no finer singers of early music’ NEW YORK TIMES Stile Antico is one of the world’s finest vocal ensembles, renowned for vibrant and expressive performances of Renaissance music. The ensemble has an extensive and award-winning discography on the Harmonia Mundi & Decca labels.
